Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 beckon to the north, only a few intersections away. A half-mile south, the lofty twin spires of Saints Peter and Paul Church are visible high above rooftops, marking Washington Square, the heart of North Beach. The Transamerica Pyramid, the city’s tallest building, and other financial district skyscrapers are framed in the distance.

East of the hotel is a mix of apartment buildings, cafes and shops. One block west of the hotel, the Powell/Mason Street cable car line — a direct route to and from Union Square — ends near the former site of the factory operated by cable car inventor Andrew Hallidie in the 1870s.
